St. John, US Virgin Islands Travel Guide: Trunk Bay and What to Pack

Francis Bay beach in Virgin Islands National Park, St. John

Roughly 60 percent of St. John is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, which keeps development off most of the island's coastline and leaves its beaches closer to untouched than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. No cruise ships dock directly on the island, so day-trip crowds are lighter than on neighboring St. Thomas.

Trunk Bay and Francis Bay

Trunk Bay is the island's most famous beach, with an underwater snorkeling trail marked for self-guided exploration right off the sand. Francis Bay, inside the national park and a little further from the main ferry dock, is quieter and backed by a mangrove-lined trail that's worth the short walk for the birdwatching alone.

Getting Around

There's no airport on St. John itself — most visitors fly into St. Thomas and take a roughly 20-minute ferry from Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay. A rental Jeep or open-air safari taxi is the easiest way to reach the park's beaches, since the island's roads are steep and public transit is limited.

When to Go

December through April is dry season and the most popular stretch, with the most reliable beach weather; late spring offers a real price break with only a modest increase in rain chances.

Book Tours & Excursions

A guided day tour that combines the ferry, Trunk Bay, and a stop at the Annaberg Sugar Plantation ruins inside the national park is one of the easiest ways to see the island without renting a vehicle.

What to Pack

Pack swimwear and water shoes for Trunk Bay's rockier entry points, reef-safe sunscreen for the protected snorkeling trail, and a light cover-up from our resort wear collection for lunch in Cruz Bay after the beach.

Practical Notes

  • Getting there: Fly into St. Thomas's Cyril E. King Airport, then ferry to Cruz Bay — budget extra time for the connection on arrival day.
  • Currency: The US dollar is standard, since the US Virgin Islands are a US territory.
  • Park fees: Trunk Bay charges a small national park entry fee, generally payable on-site.
