How to Layer Like a Pro for Autumn Adventures

Layering sounds simple until you're standing in an airport at 6am trying to decide whether the puffer goes over or under the flannel. Fall is the one season where getting the order wrong actually matters.

The rule that works: base layer for moisture, mid layer for insulation, outer layer for wind and rain — and each layer should be easy to remove without a wardrobe change. That means front closures over pullovers when you can manage it, and pieces that don't wrinkle in a packing cube.

Color helps too. Building your fall layers around two or three neutrals means every piece mixes with every other piece, so five items give you a week of different-looking outfits.

Ready to build this into your own bag? Start with our Men's Outerwear and Women's Outerwear collections — pieces chosen for exactly this kind of unpredictable fall travel.

Test your full layered outfit at home before you travel — wearing four layers is a very different fit than trying them on separately.
