The Simplest Way to Actually Budget for a Multi-Country Trip

A multi-country trip means multiple currencies, wildly different daily costs, and a budget that can spiral out of control without you noticing until you're home. Here's a simple system that holds up in practice.

Set a Daily Number, Not Just a Trip Total

A single trip-wide budget is too abstract to track in the moment. Break your total budget into a rough daily spending target per country (since costs vary so much country to country), and check in against it every couple of days rather than waiting until the end.

Track in One Currency

Pick your home currency and track everything in it, using your bank or card app's built-in conversion rather than doing mental math in three different currencies. Most banking apps show the converted amount automatically on each transaction.

Build in a Buffer

  • Add roughly 15-20% on top of your estimated daily budget for the inevitable stuff you didn't plan for — an extra activity, a taxi instead of transit, a nicer dinner.
  • Keep this buffer separate mentally so blowing through your "planned" budget on day 3 doesn't feel like a crisis.

Our Take

The trip you actually enjoy is rarely the one you tracked to the penny in real time — it's the one with a realistic daily number and a buffer, checked in on every couple of days instead of obsessed over hourly.
