Everyone has a jet lag hack, but not all of them are backed by much beyond anecdote. Here's a more honest breakdown of what actually helps your body adjust versus what mostly just feels productive.
What Actually Helps
- Light exposure timing. Getting sunlight at the right time for your destination's schedule is one of the most consistently effective tools for resetting your internal clock — seek morning light to shift earlier, evening light to shift later.
- Adjusting your schedule before you fly, even by an hour or two of shifted sleep/wake times in the days leading up to a long-haul trip.
- Staying hydrated and limiting alcohol on the flight, which won't eliminate jet lag but does reduce how much it compounds with dehydration and poor sleep quality.
What's Mostly Placebo
- Specific "jet lag diets" with rigid meal timing — there's little strong evidence these outperform simply eating at your destination's local mealtimes.
- Melatonin taken at the wrong time — it can help, but only when timed correctly to your destination's schedule; taken randomly, it can actually work against you.
Our Take
Light exposure and sleep schedule adjustment do more heavy lifting than most of the trendier hacks. Start adjusting a couple of days before you fly rather than trying to fix everything after you land.
