A Winter Weekend in San Antonio: River Walk Lights and What to Pack

The San Antonio River Walk with palm trees, bridges, and riverside restaurants

San Antonio's River Walk puts on its best show of the year starting in late November, when more than two million lights go up along the river for the Ford Holiday River Parade and Lights season — and because San Antonio runs noticeably milder than most of the country in December, it's a genuinely comfortable city to spend a winter weekend walking around after dark.

Day 1: The River Walk Itself

The River Walk's holiday lights typically go up in late November and stay lit through early January, strung along the trees and footbridges a full level below the street, which is part of what makes it feel different from a typical downtown light display — you're walking at water level, under the bridges, rather than looking up at a skyline. Evening is the right time for this, after the lights come on but before the Friday and Saturday night crowds peak.

See It From the Water

Walking the River Walk is one experience; seeing San Antonio from a river barge is a different one, and combining a cruise with the city's bigger landmarks is the efficient way to cover a lot of ground on one afternoon. The San Antonio Premium City Tour with Alamo & River Walk Cruise is a real, currently bookable small-group tour (capped at 7 travelers, about 4 hours) that pairs a GO RIO river cruise with timed admission to the Alamo, Mission San José, and the Tower of the Americas observation deck, plus hotel pickup and drop-off downtown.

Day 2: The Missions, Away From the River Walk Crowds

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park strings four 18th-century Spanish missions — Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada — along the river south of downtown, and they're free, largely uncrowded even during the holiday season, and a genuinely different side of the city from the River Walk's restaurant-and-lights density. Mission San José, the largest, is worth the most time; the others reward a shorter stop each.

El Mercado and La Villita

El Mercado, San Antonio's historic Mexican market, is worth an hour for food and shopping, and La Villita's small arts district next door is an easy walk from the River Walk's southern end — both make a good lower-key counterpoint to an evening spent in the lights-and-crowds section further north.

What to Pack

San Antonio in December is mild by national standards — expect 50s to low 60s°F by day, dropping into the 40s after dark, especially down at river level where the air is cooler and damper than the street above. A packable jacket or heavier layer matters more for the evening River Walk than the daytime missions circuit. Comfortable shoes are essential for the uneven stonework along the River Walk's older stretches. Our travel essentials collection has the packable layers built for exactly this kind of mild-day, cool-night winter trip.
