5 Underrated Winter Sun Destinations to Book Before Everyone Else Does

Waves washing up on a quiet tropical sandy beach

The usual winter-sun destinations — Cancun, the Bahamas, South Florida — are usual for a reason, but they are also crowded and expensive during peak winter months. These five get the same warm, dry winter weather with a fraction of the tourist traffic, which generally means better prices and a lot more room on the beach.

Isla Holbox, Mexico

An hour and a ferry ride from Cancun's airport, Holbox has no cars, sandy streets instead of pavement, and a laid-back fishing-village feel that the Riviera Maya's resort towns lost years ago. Winter is whale shark season nearby (through roughly mid-December) and the dry season keeps the weather reliably warm without the humidity of summer.

Roatan, Honduras

Part of the same reef system as Belize's famous barrier reef, Roatan has world-class diving and snorkeling at a fraction of the cost of the more established Caribbean dive destinations. The island sees far less cruise-ship traffic outside of a few designated port days, and West Bay Beach in the off-peak winter weeks is about as close to empty white sand as the Caribbean gets.

Salento, Colombia

Colombia's coffee region sits at high enough elevation to stay mild and spring-like year-round, which makes it a genuine alternative for travelers who want warm days without beach-destination heat and humidity. Winter is dry season in this part of Colombia, ideal for hiking the Cocora Valley's famous wax palms, and the town itself remains inexpensive relative to better-known South American destinations.

São Miguel, the Azores

Not a tropical destination, but a genuinely underrated winter escape from cold-climate cities — São Miguel's volcanic landscape, hot springs, and mild Atlantic winter (rarely below the 50s) offer a change of scenery without a long-haul flight from the US East Coast or Europe. It remains one of the least crowded parts of Portugal even in high season, let alone winter.

Providencia, Colombia

A short flight from San Andrés, Providencia has some of the clearest water in the Caribbean and almost none of the development — no high-rise resorts, no cruise ships, and a fraction of the visitors of nearly anywhere else on this list. It is harder to reach, which is precisely why it has stayed this quiet.

Booking Tip

Fewer direct flights generally serve these destinations, so building in an extra connection or a short domestic leg is normal — budget slightly more travel time than a flagship destination would take, and it pays off in far lower crowds once there.
