How to Pack for a Trip With Wildly Different Climates in One Itinerary

A trip that combines mountains and beach, or a cold city and a tropical stop, is one of the harder packing puzzles — you genuinely need different gear, but you still want to travel light.

Build Around Layers, Not Duplicate Outfits

Instead of packing entirely separate wardrobes for each climate, build a layering system: lightweight base pieces that work in warm weather on their own, and can be layered under a packable jacket or fleece for the colder leg of the trip.

Prioritize Multi-Use Gear

  • A packable rain jacket or windbreaker that doubles as your cold-weather outer layer.
  • Shoes that can transition between light hiking and casual wear, rather than packing separate pairs for each climate.
  • A scarf or buff that works as sun protection, warmth, or a dust/wind layer depending on the leg of the trip.

Sequence Your Packing by Itinerary Order

Pack items you'll need first near the top or in an easily accessible section, and consider a packing cube system split by climate leg rather than by clothing type — it makes it much easier to grab exactly what you need without digging through gear for a different climate entirely.

Our Take

The instinct is to pack for the most extreme version of every climate on the trip. Resist that — a few genuinely versatile pieces beat a suitcase stuffed with single-purpose items for each stop.
