Chasing Color in New Hampshire's White Mountains

White Mountains fall foliage

The White Mountains do fall color differently than Vermont — steeper, rockier, more dramatic — and North Conway makes a solid, walkable base for exploring them.

The Kancamagus Highway is the postcard drive everyone comes for, but the real color show is often on the shorter hikes just off it — Diana's Baths or Franconia Notch reward an hour of walking with views you'd otherwise only get from a car window. Temperatures swing hard between the valley floor and any elevation gain, so a jacket that layers matters more here than almost anywhere else on this list.

Footwear needs to handle granite and roots, not just pavement — this is a trip where the boots do real work.

Check the state's foliage tracker before you book — peak color in the higher elevations can run a full two weeks ahead of the valley towns.
