Finger Lakes Fall Getaway: Wineries, Waterfalls, and Foliage

Finger Lakes vineyard

The Finger Lakes stretch fall color across eleven long, narrow lakes and more wineries than most people realize exist outside California — and it's a fraction of the crowd of the bigger-name destinations.

Wine trails run along nearly every lake, with tasting rooms that overlook the water and vineyards climbing the hillsides behind them. Waterfalls are the region's other secret — Watkins Glen and Taughannock rank among the best in the Northeast, and fall's lower water levels make the trails around them easier walking than spring's runoff season.

The lake microclimates keep afternoons mild even as the surrounding hills go full color, so this is a trip where a lighter layering system works better than a heavy coat.
