Holiday and New Year's Eve Cruises: What to Actually Expect Onboard

A cruise ship lit up at night in port

Sailing over Christmas or New Year's is one of the most popular windows in cruising, and lines lean hard into it — but it also comes with higher prices, bigger crowds, and a few quirks worth knowing before booking.

Onboard Programming

Expect a decorated ship from stem to stern, a formal New Year's Eve countdown party on the pool deck or in the main atrium with balloon drops and champagne toasts, and special holiday menus in the main dining room on December 24, 25, and 31. Santa typically makes an appearance for kids on ships sailing over Christmas, and midnight fireworks are increasingly common on private islands and select itineraries where regulations allow it.

Pricing and Booking

Holiday sailings routinely price 20 to 40 percent higher than the same itinerary a few weeks earlier or later, and cabins sell out furthest in advance for this window of any time of year. Booking six months to a year ahead is realistic for holiday sailings; waiting until fall for a December departure usually means a much smaller pool of available cabins and no meaningful discount.

What's Different About the Crowd

Multi-generational family groups are far more common on holiday sailings than on a typical cruise, which means larger dinner parties, more kids in the pool areas, and a livelier overall atmosphere. Solo travelers and couples looking for a quiet trip may prefer to avoid the December 24 to January 1 window specifically and sail the week before or after instead.

Packing for a Holiday Sailing

A festive outfit for the New Year's Eve party is worth packing even on casual lines, since most ships dress up the main event even without a formal dress code. Dresses and accessories that pack flat are the easiest way to bring a dressier option without using extra luggage space.

Shore Time on Holiday Sailings

Many ports of call, especially in the Caribbean, have reduced shop and excursion availability on December 25 specifically, so it is worth checking which day-of-week the ship is in port before assuming a full slate of activities. Browse and pre-book excursions on Viator for the ports that are open.
