How to Actually Maximize Your PTO for a Longer Trip in 2026

Limited vacation days don't have to mean limited trips. With a bit of strategic planning around holidays and weekends, a handful of PTO days can stretch into a genuinely long trip.

The Basic Strategy

Look at your company holidays and any long weekends already on the calendar, then place your PTO days directly adjacent to them. A holiday that falls on a Thursday, paired with a Friday off, turns two PTO days into a four-day trip. Stack that pattern around multiple holidays throughout the year and the math adds up fast.

Where to Look for Bridge Opportunities

  • Holidays that fall on a Tuesday or Thursday are the highest-value targets — a single bridge day connects them to the weekend.
  • Check if your company offers any floating holidays or half-day options around major holidays — these often go unused simply because people forget to plan around them.
  • Map out the full year at once rather than planning trip by trip — it's much easier to see bridge opportunities looking at 12 months together.

Our Take

Most people default to using PTO reactively, a few days at a time as trips come up. Mapping the full year against your company's holiday calendar once, early in the year, consistently produces more travel time from the same number of PTO days.
