Top 5 Spring Break Destinations: Where to Go and What to Pack

Spring break hits differently when you actually plan it well. The difference between a trip you talk about for years and one you barely remember is preparation — knowing where to go, what to expect, and showing up with the right wardrobe for the experience you want to have.

Here are the five best spring break destinations, what makes each one worth choosing, and exactly what to pack.

1. Cancun, Mexico

Cancun is the most popular spring break destination in the world, and for good reason. The beaches along the Hotel Zone are spectacular — powdery white sand, turquoise water, and warm temperatures in the low 80s throughout March and April. The Hotel Zone is purpose-built for this kind of vacation: all-inclusive resorts, beach clubs, rooftop bars, and nightlife venues within walking distance of each other. But Cancun has more to offer beyond the party scene — the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World) are about 2.5 hours away and absolutely worth a day trip.

What to pack: Swimwear is the foundation — bring 3–4 swimsuits so you always have a dry option. Lightweight cover-up dresses and resort sets transition from the beach to the pool bar without effort. For women, going-out dresses and two-piece sets for nights out — Cancun nightlife is dressy. For men, swim trunks, linen shirts, and one or two collared shirts for evenings. A small crossbody bag for port days and evenings. Reef-safe sunscreen is required at many Mexican beach destinations.

2. Miami, Florida

Miami offers the full spring break experience with the added advantage of being a world-class city year-round. South Beach has the famous beach scene, the Art Deco architecture, and the nightlife. But Miami also has Wynwood's art and food culture, Little Havana's authenticity, and the Florida Keys an easy drive away. Spring temperatures sit in the low-to-mid 80s, the water is warm enough to swim in, and the energy is unlike anywhere else in the US.

Miami is also the right choice for travelers who want beach and city in equal measure — a morning at the beach, an afternoon in Wynwood, and a dinner in Brickell is a perfect Miami day.

What to pack: Miami rewards bold dressing. Bikinis and one-pieces worn as part of a complete look — with high-waist shorts or a cover-up dress — is standard Miami daytime style. Statement going-out looks for evenings. For men, printed shirts and Cuban-collar styles fit the aesthetic perfectly. A tote for the beach and a crossbody for nights out. Comfortable sandals for daytime, heeled sandals or boots for evenings.

3. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is the most underrated spring break destination on this list. It is a US territory — no passport required for US citizens, no currency exchange, no international phone charges — but it feels completely different from mainland travel. San Juan's Old City is UNESCO World Heritage-listed, with pastel colonial buildings, massive Spanish fortresses, and cobblestone streets. The beaches, particularly Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island, are genuinely among the best in the world. The food is excellent, the rum drinks are legendary, and the music culture is world-class.

Puerto Rico also tends to be less crowded and more affordable than Cancun or Miami during peak spring break weeks — a meaningful advantage.

What to pack: Swimwear for multiple beach days. Lightweight dresses for Old San Juan exploration — the cobblestone streets require comfortable sandals or flat shoes, not heels. Casual sets for daytime, bolder looks for the nightlife in Condado and Santurce. A crossbody bag is essential for the narrow streets of Old San Juan.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is the best non-beach spring break destination in the US, and if you time your visit around Mardi Gras (which falls in late February or early March depending on the year), it is one of the greatest party experiences anywhere in the world. Even outside of Mardi Gras, New Orleans in spring is exceptional — Jazz Fest runs late April into early May, the weather is warm and pleasant before summer humidity sets in, and the city's food, music, and culture are available 365 days a year.

New Orleans rewards travelers who explore beyond Bourbon Street. Frenchmen Street for live music, the Garden District for architecture, the French Quarter markets for the mornings — the city has layers that most spring breakers never find because they do not look.

What to pack: Spring in New Orleans means warm days (70s) with occasional rain. Lightweight dresses and casual tops with shorts or skirts for daytime. A light jacket for evenings and air-conditioned venues. If visiting for Mardi Gras, bring your most colorful, boldest outfit — sequins, statement pieces, and purple-gold-green color schemes are celebrated. Comfortable shoes you can walk and stand in for hours — the French Quarter streets are uneven. A small crossbody bag that stays close in crowds.

5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is the all-inclusive capital of the Caribbean — a 20-mile stretch of coconut palm-lined beaches on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, almost entirely dedicated to resort vacations. The appeal is simplicity: one price covers everything, the weather is reliably sunny (330+ days a year), the beaches are genuinely beautiful, and the resorts range from budget-friendly to ultra-luxury. It is the easiest possible tropical vacation and one of the most popular spring break destinations for groups.

Beyond the resorts, the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park is worth a morning, and Saona Island — accessible by catamaran from most resorts — is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

What to pack: An all-inclusive resort vacation is almost entirely about swimwear and resort wear. Pack 4–5 swimsuits and plan to live in them. Cover-up dresses and lightweight resort sets for moving between the pool and the restaurant. Most resorts have a dress code for dinner restaurants — a midi dress or nice set covers it for women; a collared shirt and chinos for men. A beach tote for the pool. Comfortable sandals for everything.

How to Choose

The right spring break destination depends on what you actually want from the trip. If you want maximum beach time in a warm, energetic environment with easy logistics, Cancun or Punta Cana are the simplest choices. If you want beach plus real city culture, Miami or Puerto Rico deliver more variety. If you want something completely different from a beach vacation, New Orleans is in a category of its own.

Whatever you choose: book early (spring break prices spike fast), pack light enough to move freely, dress for the experience you want to have, and go in prepared to make the most of every day.
