There's a particular kind of magic to watching fall foliage scroll past a train window instead of a windshield — no traffic, no navigating, just color.
The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad runs along one of New England's oldest rail corridors, a line dating back to the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad of 1848. The route departs from Meredith, follows the shoreline of Lake Winnipesaukee down to Weirs Beach and Laconia's Paugus Bay, then heads back — about two to two and a half hours round trip, long enough to feel like a real excursion without eating your whole day. Onboard service includes snacks and drinks, with a first-class upgrade for those who want a bit more comfort.
Cars can run cool, especially with the windows open for photos, so a jacket worth wearing (not just carrying) is worth having on hand for the ride.
