Several ferry companies run frequent crossings from Mackinaw City and nearby St. Ignace, typically taking around 15-20 minutes — the ride itself is scenic, passing beneath the Mackinac Bridge on some routes, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.

Beyond the famous fudge shops, the island's restaurants lean into Great Lakes whitefish and other regional specialties, with several offering porch or waterfront seating overlooking the harbor — a nice complement to the horse-drawn-carriage pace of the island.
